| Newport Beach began surf camps in the summer of 1963. Scott Morlan took over the surf lesson program for Newport's Recreation Department in 1973, using the innovative shortboards of the period emblazoned with the distinctive large blue City of Newport logo. Lessons were held on both weekdays and weekends during the summer months. In the early 1990's "soft" surfboards became available and both youngsters and adults were drawn to Scott's classes to experience the surfing phenomenon. Spring and Fall classes were added to the lineup about this time as well, and a decade later "privates" were offered for the first time. Scott continues to facilitate the program today with a widely expanded offering of classes, including the traditional novice lesson (weekday camps or 5 consecutive Saturday classes), plus an intermediate class for those who desire a deeper learning experience in their surfing. Privates continue to be highly popular. Our goal is to have you come away with an exhilarating experience which will become a lifelong ritual. Scott has taught literally thousands of clients the 'art of dancing on waves'. The surf lessons offered at the Newport Pier have evolved to be completely comprehensive, serving the learning needs of both youngsters and adults. The Newport Pier area generates waves for both beginner and advanced surfers, so if you are looking for laid back gentle rollers or hollow barrels for critical takeoffs, we've got your spot. Featuring both male and female surf instructors, our staff is knowledgable, personable and seasoned, maximizing your 'bang for the buck!' Parking is ample (also metered from 8-6 daily so bring quarters). Restrooms, showers and Lifeguard Headquarters are adjacent and there truly is no finer place to learn how to surf anywhere else in Orange County! Come join us! |
